INTRO TO STRANDED KNITTING

Tuesday, October 7 from 10:30 am – noon.

This class will get you started on using two colors to form beautiful patterns for hats, gloves, sweaters, etc. You will learn how to hold and work two yarns, to catch floats, and to read color charts. Experience with knitting in the round is essential. Materials needed: 2 balls of worsted weight yarn of high contrast colors; US 8, 16” circular needles (or double points). Students will receive a 10% in-store discount on materials.

Homework: In preparation for the class, cast on 88 stitches of worsted weight yarn with one color and work 3 rows in the round.

STEEK YOUR KNITS

Tuesday, November 4: 10:30-noon

This class is designed to guide knitters through an operation that is famous for causing anxiety in the uninitiated: the cutting of steeks (slashed openings in hand-knitted fabric). We’ll be doing both by hand—no sewing machine required! Technique Requirements: Knit/purl; cast on/bind off; working in the round; easy colorwork

Homework: We will send you a PDF so you can complete a small project before the class. Bring completed homework to class. If you haven’t the time to do it, please bring a large flat knitted (stockinette) swatch of at least 6” high and 4” wide. The steek may not be as amazing, but you will learn the technique. Students will receive a 10% in-store discount on materials.

BUTTONHOLES

Tuesday, December 2: 10:30-noon

Buttonholes. Just when you are ready to finish a cardigan, you realize you have to make buttonholes. In this class, you will work up 4 types of buttonholes: vertical, horizontal, eyelet, and a Stephen West big buttonhole.

No homework, but bring to class a light-colored worsted weight yarn (no multis or gradients), appropriately sized needles for the yarn, stitch markers, scissors, and a tapestry needle. Students will receive a 10% in-store discount on materials.
