Roving and batts are both prepared wool fiber, just processed differently: roving is combed into a long, aligned strip, while batts are carded into a looser, flatter sheet that's often easier to layer and blend colors with for needle felting projects. Either works for most needle felting, though batts tend to be favored for their blendability when a project calls for shading or gradient color.

Felting needles are barbed, and it's the repeated stabbing motion — not heat or water — that locks the wool fibers together into a firm, sculptable shape.
