Blaze Orange Wool Yarn by Bartlettyarns
Blaze (flourescent) orange 100% wool yarn sounds almost like an oxymoron, but it really exists! We think Bartlettyarns may be the only domestic yarn company producing it, and lucky for us, Bartlettyarns is in Maine. Bartlettyarns has been producing yarn since 1821 when Ozias Bartlett founded it in Harmony. It sits along side Higgins Stream in a vintage mill building that holds the last remaining working spinning mule in the United States.
We are offering this yarn either in a worsted weight (knitting at 4 1/2 stitches per inch) or a super bulky (knitting at about 2 1/2 stitches per inch). Each four once skein of worsted has 210 yards and the super bulky has 80 yards. This yarn responds well to blocking: softening it and smoothing the stitches.
The color of this yarn would be considered a "hunter's orange" and turned into a hat or mittens, it would make a great gift.
We are also offering the worsted weight in a kit to make the Nezinscot Farm Hat. The band of this hat is lined with cotton, making it perfect for anyone who may be wool sensitive, as well as offering an extra layer on the ears. We are offering three color options of cotton from a Maine company: navy, red, and silver. The skein of cotton in your kit will line two hats, so may we suggest buying another single skein of Bartlettyarns worsted weight and you can make two hats! You will need a #7 - 16" circular needle for the liner, and a #8 - 16" circular needle for the body of the hat.
With the purchase of the bulky weight yarn, we are offering a free knit mitten pattern. You will need #11 and #13 double point needles. You can knit a pair in an evening!
