Collection: Fingering Weight Yarn
Fingering weight is the workhorse of sock and shawl knitting — thin enough for fine detail, sturdy enough for everyday wear. This collection runs from classic nylon-blend sock yarns to merino, alpaca, cotton, and silk-mohair options, so whether you're knitting socks that need to survive a Maine winter or a lace shawl that needs to drape, there's a base here for it.

Fingering weight (also called 4-ply, roughly 14 wraps per inch) typically knits up on US 1–3 (2.25–3.25mm) needles at a gauge of 27–32 stitches per 4 inches, though exact gauge always depends on the specific yarn and your tension.
Fingering weight is a natural fit for colorwork (stranded knitting, mosaic, intarsia) since the thinner gauge keeps floats manageable and finished pieces from getting bulky. It's also the standard weight for most traditional sock patterns and a common choice for baby garments, where a lighter fabric matters.
This collection covers the full range of what fingering weight is used for. For socks and other high-wear pieces, look for sock yarns with nylon reinforcement — the nylon content adds durability without changing the hand of the yarn much. For shawls, wraps, and lightweight garments, our merino, cotton, alpaca, and silk blends offer more drape and a softer finish, although yarns with nylon are also suitable.
Care varies by base: many of our merino yarns and all of our sock yarns are superwash and machine washable, while alpaca, silk and mohair blends generally need hand washing. Check the individual product page for care instructions.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between fingering and sock yarn?
What's the difference between fingering and sock yarn?
They're the same weight, but "sock yarn" usually means a fingering weight blended with nylon (typically 20–25%) for extra durability. Fingering weight without nylon is better suited to shawls and garments than to high-friction pieces like socks.
What size needles do I use with fingering weight yarn?
What size needles do I use with fingering weight yarn?
Most fingering weight yarns are knit on US 1–3 (2.25–3.25mm) needles, but always check the yarn label or your pattern's recommended gauge. Some designs call for fingering yarn knit at a much looser gauge to create a drapey fabric.
